The road of love

Log book

We walk along the road of love that connects Riomaggiore to Manarola, inside the Cinque Terre National Park. This path was dug out in 1870 by the workers from both villages who worked on the doubling of the railway and it was used as a safe depot for explosives. Until that moment, the only road that joined the two places was very bad. So the volunteers decided to repair the old road and at last unite the two communes, giving the road the name Via Nuova.

The name “Road of love” came into being with a story written in the 1970s by a journalist, though actually it was always called this way by local couples that came to this romantic and isolated place. It is even said that love burgeons between two people that go all along the road together!

Walking along the road we meet a lot of couples of all nationalities and ages, until we reach the part of the road covered by padlocks, selected as a symbol of love.
