Il mio co-autore di queste note di viagio è la barca meravigliosa su cui ho avuto anche l’onore di attraversare il Sud Pacifico da Tahiti a Sidney e che in seguito mi ha permesso di innamorarmi dalla Tailandia e del Mar delle Andamane.
Stormvogel è un famoso ketch del 1961, che affascina come una vecchia signora del mare, ma delle lentezze della barca d’epoca non ha nulla. Compete con le barche moderne, pur risentendo della mancanza dei coffee-grinder, è stata perfettamente riattrezzata per le regate e la crociera di lusso. Ad oggi ha fatto già 6 volte il giro del mondo.
Stormvogel è nata nel 1961 dalla matita di Van De Staad e Laurent Gilles, ha vinto tutte le regate oceaniche degli anni ’60, nel 1987 ha girato in Australia il film "Ore 10 calma piatta" (sì, è lei la splendida barca protagonista) nell’inquietante film della Warner Brothers, con una giovane Nicole Kidman agli esordi. Negli ultimi venti anni ha vissuto in acque tailandesi, regatando o veleggiando alla scoperta di isole ancora salve dall’invasione turistica, dannosa sia per i luoghi che per gli abitanti di questa dolcissima e fiera terra. Nel 2007 Stormvogel è tornato a regatare in Italia tra le barche classiche, per rinnovare anche in Italia e in Mediterraneo i successi ottenuti in acque orientali.
